Isa rushes to her classroom and sits down next to Helen, her best friend. \u201cAlright, students! Settle down!\u201d the teacher, Ms. Chai, says. \u201cNow as you know, Christmas is coming up. So we have to prepare for the&#8230;Christmas Pageant! Are you all excited?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is silent. \u201cSince people aren\u2019t answering, I think the answer is no,\u201d a boy whispers. \u201cEveryone,\u201d the teacher continues. \u201cThe Christmas Pageant is a very important part of the school year! So, this year, instead of casting roles, the whole school will be in this pageant. Some will paint the background. Others will do acting. We have the people backstage\u2026\u201d She pauses. \u201cSo we must be ready and respectful. Okay?\u201d \u201cYes,\u201d everyone says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa groans softly. She wishes that she didn\u2019t have to participate in the pageant. Now, she did. Last year, she didn\u2019t perform in the Christmas Pageant because she was sick. Good thing she was sick! Isa had many lines. And she got to miss out on the mess that everyone made last year during the pageant!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe Isa could fake a sickness to not have to go and act at the pageant. But then again, that was the oldest trick in the book. The teachers would\u2019ve been bound to figure it out, maybe discussing the matter based on coincidence or not. Well, Isa would probably just have to go with it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, everyone, open your reading textbooks and read pages 78-85. It\u2019s an excerpt from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Island of the Blue Dolphins<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a fan<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tastic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">novel!\u201d Mrs. Chai says with delight. All the students open their reading textbooks and start reading. After a while, everyone is finished. \u201cNow, I\u2019m going to ask some questions. Carlos&#8230;what is\u2026\u201d Isa doesn\u2019t pay attention to the rest of it until she is asked a question.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat point of view is this story told in, Isa?\u201d the teacher asks. \u201cIt\u2019s told in the 1st person by Karana.\u201d Isa replies. \u201cExcellent!\u201d Mrs. Chai smiles. \u201cAlright, everyone! Now go to lunch. I want to speak with you, Isa!\u201d Everyone else walks out of the classroom. Isa asks, \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, first of all, I wanted to say that your grades are very good! You\u2019re getting A pluses every time we have a quiz or test!\u201d Mrs. Chai thinks for a moment. \u201cDid your parents help you study?\u201d \u201cNo. My older brother, Charlie, and my elder sister, Roxanne, help me study at home whenever I don\u2019t understand something.\u201d Isa explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWell, I was thinking about putting you in a gifted program. It\u2019s called \u2018Shooting Stars!\u2122\u2019 You might enjoy it. They have classes during winter and summer. I thought maybe you could sign up! You can find tons of students like you there!\u201d Mrs. Chai says. \u201cI know you don\u2019t have many friends since you started this school last year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah\u2026\u201d Isa looks down at her feet. She wishes she is more popular, like other kids in her class. \u201cWell, you can go to lunch now,\u201d Mrs. Chai says. \u201cRun along now.\u201d Isa walks into the cafeteria to order her lunch. She walks to the table she and Helen always sit at. To her shock, she finds other girls and boys at the table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helen turns her head. \u201cOh, hey. Who are you? Anyways, wanna join this table? We only have&#8230;oh, wait, we don\u2019t have any seats left, sorry.\u201d She gives a sorry look. \u201cDon\u2019t worry. Maybe you can sit over there with the lunch lady. She looks lonely.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa is boiling. Why is Helen behaving like this?! Did Isa do something wrong? No, of course not! \u201cHelen,\u201d Isa says calmly. \u201cA word?\u201d \u201cGladly! I don\u2019t know how you know my name, though. Excuse me, besties!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa and Helen go to another table where no one would hear them. \u201cHelen! Why are you acting like you don\u2019t know me? Why are you acting so mean?\u201d Isa asks. \u201cBecause, idiot! I finally have some new friends. New <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">friends! Unlike you. All you ever did was talk about science, social studies, blah blah blah!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cB-but I thought you were enjoying our discussion of protons and atoms!\u201d Isa says. \u201cNo. I was only pretending to be enjoying myself. You\u2019re not a cool kid. You\u2019ll only embarrass me more in front of my new besties!\u201d Helen walks back to the other table. \u201cHelen, wait!\u201d Isa wails, but Helen doesn\u2019t turn her head around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the next few days, everyone has roles in the pageant. But Isa is too upset to even think about a pageant. She wishes that the school would call off the dumb pageant and just set up a stupid mission bazaar. A boy comes up to Isa during lunchtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHey,\u201d the boy says. \u201cCan I join you?\u201d \u201cSure.\u201d Isa nods. The boy sits down. \u201cMy name\u2019s Ron. What\u2019s yours?\u201d All Isa can let out is a small \u201cIsa.\u201d \u201cI saw what happened a few days ago,\u201d Ron says. \u201cThe drama between Helen and me?\u201d Isa asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The children eat their lunches silently. \u201cDo you&#8230;wanna hang out with me?\u201d Ron asks. \u201cSure. I guess. You can\u2019t be worse than Miss Popular,\u201d Isa says. They both laugh. \u201cYou mean that Helen girl? She\u2019s not popular yet. Only has a few followers at school.\u201d Ron looks at me. \u201cAnd who cares about Helen? You gotta let some people go.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa nods. The bell rings. \u201cWe should get back to class,\u201d Isa says. \u201cTtyl?\u201d Ron asks. \u201cTtyl!\u201d Isa chuckles. She feels like she\u2019s in a good mood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the pageant\u2019s rehearsal, Helen says hi to Isa. \u201cHello, Helen,\u201d Isa says, frowning. \u201cWhat do ya want?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh, nothing. Just wanted to say congrats on getting the biggest part of the play.\u201d Helen sneers. \u201cI convinced the director of the pageant to give you the biggest role. You have over 30 lines.\u201d She pauses and then whispers, \u201cFor each scene.\u201d \u201cWhat da-\u201d Isa exclaimed. \u201cWhy\u2019d you do that?\u201d \u201cI knew you\u2019d hate this part, but if you do well, you might actually become popular,\u201d Helen says. \u201cAnywaysgoodluckbyeepeace!\u201d Helen disappears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMrs. Palinsky, there must have been a misunderstanding! I never wanted <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part!\u201d Isa exclaimed. \u201cWhat do you mean? You have the part of the dog that the girl gets for Christmas.\u201d Mrs. Palinsky says. \u201cReally? Helen told me I had the biggest role,\u201d Isa explains. \u201cWell, I\u2019m sure she meant no harm.\u201d Mrs. Palinsky smiles like everything is fine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa groans and goes into the school hallway where the lockers are. She finds a doorway marked, \u201cDon\u2019t enter. Something is in here.\u201d Isa opens the door anyway. What harm would it do anyway? She opens the door to find a cute little baby unicorn. The baby is adorable! It has four tiny legs, little sparkly wings, and pink hooves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa is speechless and immediately puts the unicorn in her school bag. When she gets home from school, she unzips her backpack and lets the unicorn out. Isa waves at the unicorn. She knows it can\u2019t talk; she\u2019s a full expert on unicorns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you think unicorns are not real, you\u2019re wrong! Unicorns are real, and Isa has one to prove it. Isa realizes that this unicorn would probably make her popular at school, but she knows she can\u2019t let out the secret about the unicorn. She has to protect the unicorn and feed it and do other things to make sure it doesn\u2019t die or get injured. But for a 10-year-old girl, that\u2019s a lot of stuff, right? How can she do all that?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isa starts by naming the unicorn. She names her Fluffy since, true to the unicorn\u2019s name, she is fluffy. And cute. She also grabs water and feeds it to the unicorn. Unicorns love water. Especially baby unicorns. \u201cI shall feed you some chips. Be right back.\u201d Isa exits the room. The baby unicorn behaves and sits in the bedroom. Isa immediately comes back and feeds the unicorn the chips.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSquee!\u201d The unicorn makes a sound with delight. \u201cI guess she likes that.\u201d The next day, Isa goes to school and practices in the audition for the pageant. All she has to do is say, \u201cWoof, woof!\u201d and crawl around like a dog. Couldn\u2019t they have found a robot dog for the part?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day after that, after Isa goes home, she dresses up in her dog costume and says to Fluffy, \u201cI\u2019ll be right back! Here, hide in here.\u201d Isa puts Fluffy in a box with holes, water, and food and leaves for the pageant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the pageant, Isa gets nervous. Yes, all she has to do is bark and crawl, but what if she messed something up? She gets butterflies in her stomach. Luckily, she gets sick again, so someone else has to do the puppy act. Can you guess who that person is? That\u2019s right, Helen! Helen has to replace Isa for the pageant\u2019s dog, and another girl gets to play the role of the one who gets the puppy for Christmas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, all\u2019s well that ends well.
