Beep! Beep!\u201d Sheila\u2019s alarm clock beeps. Sheila wakes up excitedly and rushes downstairs. She sees pancakes on the kitchen table. Today is Sheila\u2019s birthday. She\u2019s very excited because every year, on her birthday, she and her cousin, Nicki, go to a different cafe to celebrate her birthday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila finishes her pancakes. Her family says, \u201cHappy birthday!\u201d She opens her presents, and soon, she\u2019s on her way to a new cafe. She calls her cousin to meet her there. She gives Nicki the address as well. The cafe Sheila goes to is called \u201cSweets and Treats!\u201d She can\u2019t wait to celebrate her birthday with her cousin!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After one hour, Sheila waits for Nicki at the cafe. After two hours, she gets worried and calls Nicki. Nicki responds. \u201cNicki! Where are you? I have been waiting for you for two hours!\u201d \u201cSheila, I\u2019m sorry, I can\u2019t make it,\u201d Nicki replies. \u201cWhy?\u201d Sheila demands. \u201cI\u2019m sick, and I can\u2019t eat any sweets,\u201d Nicki replies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOh.\u201d Sheila\u2019s heart sinks. Who would she share this special birthday with then? \u201cMaybe you can call some of your friends to celebrate. Anyways, gotta go. Bye.\u201d Nicki hangs up. \u201cSuch a prompt call,\u201d Sheila says. \u201cBut she\u2019s sick.\u201d Sheila sighs. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I guess I\u2019ll buy a cake for my family and me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Sheila thinks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She gets up from the table and asks for a whole vanilla birthday cake. \u201cSure,\u201d the person behind the counter says. She gets a vanilla birthday cake from a shelf and says, \u201cHere you go.\u201d \u201cThank you,\u201d Sheila replies, handing the person $300. Sheila places the cake on her table. She cuts a piece of cake onto a plate, starting to eat. \u201cExcuse me?\u201d a voice asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila looks up. A girl is there. She asks, \u201cCan I have a seat?\u201d \u201cHelp yourself,\u201d Sheila says, munching on the cake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI overheard your conversation with your friend or cousin. Maybe I can celebrate your birthday?\u201d the girl says. \u201cBut we never met. You\u2019re, like, a total stranger,\u201d Sheila says. The girl giggles. \u201cI know. But I think it would be nice to celebrate your birthday with you.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s nice,\u201d Sheila replies. \u201cThanks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo problem!\u201d the girl smiles. \u201cLemme sing happy birthday to you! It\u2019ll be fun!\u201d She sings happy birthday to Sheila, but not too loud that everyone would notice. Just a few bystanders are listening. Some pass by the table and say their happy birthday wishes. \u201cI haven\u2019t introduced myself. My name\u2019s Carol,\u201d the girl says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCool, my name\u2019s Sheila.\u201d Sheila smiles. \u201cThanks again for celebrating my birthday with me. Do you want some tea?\u201d Carol says, \u201cYeah, but I\u2019ll pay for it. Don\u2019t worry.\u201d Carol goes ahead and buys tea for the both of us in a jiffy. We both sip it. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to meet you, Carol.\u201d Sheila sips her drink. \u201cNice to meet you, too!\u201d Carol replies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you want to become friends?\u201d Carol asks. \u201cSure, I guess.\u201d Sheila says. \u201cI mean, you\u2019re super nice and all.\u201d \u201cYou too!\u201d Carol answers. \u201cDo you want me to tell you something?\u201d \u201cYeah, okay,\u201d Sheila says. Carol and Sheila finish the tea, and they carry the cake outside. \u201cDid you know that one species of jellyfish is actually immortal?\u201d Carol asks. \u201cReally? That\u2019s why we went outside?\u201d Sheila asks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNope. Do you see the clouds? They\u2019re gray, which means there\u2019s gonna be a storm.\u201d Carol explains. \u201cOh yeah,\u201d Sheila notices. \u201cSo we should go to my house.\u201d Sheila and Carol go to Sheila\u2019s house immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMom, I\u2019m home,\u201d Sheila says. \u201cI have a new friend. Her name\u2019s Carol. And I brought cake!\u201d Sheila leads Carol into the kitchen. Sheila places the cake on the island. \u201cOh, nice to meet you,\u201d Mom says to Carol. \u201cThanks for bringing cake!\u201d Mom says to Sheila. \u201cI\u2019ll cut some slices.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCome on, Carol, let\u2019s go to my room and play with my dolls!\u201d Sheila says. They go into Sheila\u2019s room. It has drawings on the walls. \u201cWow, you\u2019re a great artist!\u201d Carol says, admiring the drawings. \u201cThanks!\u201d Sheila says. \u201cHere they are!\u201d She holds up two dolls that both are wearing dresses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo, how do you play with them?\u201d Carol asks. \u201cOh, they can move by themselves when you pull this string.\u201d Sheila pulls a string, and the dolls start walking on the floor. \u201cIncredible!\u201d Carol says. \u201cYeah, they were on sale. $500 for 2 dolls!\u201d Sheila says excitedly. They continue playing with the dolls until Carol says, \u201cI have to go home.\u201d Carol exits the house, remembering the address. She walks home herself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila doesn\u2019t say anything and then goes to dinner. She has vegetables and watermelon because she loves those. She gets ready for bed and sleeps. The next morning, a note is left at her bed. \u201cCome to my house. Here\u2019s my address: 555 Winfred Avenue, Danicksville.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila goes downstairs, eats breakfast, gets ready, and goes to Carol\u2019s house. \u201cWe just moved here. So I\u2019m kind of friendless. Unless you count my cousin, though.\u201d Sheila says. They continue talking. Little do they know that Sheila\u2019s cousin, Nicki, is now watching through the window and listening to their conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBye, Carol!\u201d Sheila exits the house and sees Nicki, who is better. \u201cNicki! You\u2019re better!\u201d Sheila exclaims. \u201cWhy are you hanging out with her?\u201d Nicki asks. \u201cShe\u2019s a mean girl.\u201d \u201cWho, Carol? Nah, she\u2019s nice.\u201d Sheila smiles. \u201cThat\u2019s how she lures her victims,\u201d Nicki says quietly. \u201cAre you just jealous?\u201d Sheila frowns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, okay?\u201d Nicki says. \u201cI just pulled a prank on you yesterday. I didn\u2019t think you would take it so seriously.\u201d \u201cOh, well, I thought you were sick,\u201d Sheila says. \u201cAnd it didn\u2019t really benefit you anyway. You didn\u2019t get cake, tea, or to spend time with me. Why would you prank me and just pretend you were sick?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause I wanted to go to my new friend\u2019s birthday party!\u201d Nicki says. \u201cShe came this year, and when she told me her birthday, I had to decide whether to go to the cafe with you or her birthday party with a DJ and a pool and an obstacle course! Which one would you pick?\u201d Sheila pauses, then shouts, \u201cI would pick going to the cafe rather than lying to my friend.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheila storms off to her house. Nicki calls after her, \u201cIt was just a prank and a lie.\u201d As Sheila storms off, she thinks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s our special thing we do. I understand the birthday party, but she could\u2019ve at least paid me a visit after the party<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At home, Sheila gets a call from Nicki. She keeps declining Nicki\u2019s calls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day, Sheila answers Nicki\u2019s call while at Carol\u2019s house. \u201cLook, I\u2019m sorry about getting upset about the birthday thing. It\u2019s fine, really! Can we just be friends again?\u201d Sheila asks. \u201cSure, if you can do my chores for a week,\u201d Nicki says, laughing. \u201cAlright, so that is a yes?\u201d Sheila asks. \u201cYep!\u201d Nicki says.
