Navratna is a Sanskrit word that means nine gems. Navratna dal is made from a mixture of nine lentils and legumes. It is very healthy and full of nutrients. It can be served as dinner or lunch with steamed rice.
Ingredients are Rajma/Kidney beans, White Chickpeas, Black Chickpeas, Black-eyed Peas/Lobhia, Dried Green Peas, Moong Dal/Green gram, Urad Dal/white lentil, Chana Dal/Split Chickpeas, Toovar Dal/split pigeon peas, Sunflower Oil, Tomatoes, Garam Masala, Salt to taste, Cumin Seeds, Turmeric Powder, and Brown Sugar.
Instructions
- Soak lentils and legumes in water overnight
- Pressure-cook lentils with water till they are fully cooked
- Chop Tomatoes
- Add oil to a pot, then add cumin seeds
- Sauté it for a few seconds, and then add the chopped tomatoes
- Sauté it for a few minutes till tomatoes turn mushy
- Add garam masala, turmeric powder, and salt and mix it
- Add lentils, salt to taste, and brown sugar, and mix it well
- Close the lid and let it simmer
- Garnish chopped coriander before serving
