Do you love books that have inspiring morals? Do you love stories about friendship and finding the confidence inside yourself? Then this is a great book choice for you!
Fish in a Tree is written by the New York Times Bestseller Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This book is about a girl named Ally who has a disability called dyslexia. Ally can’t read very well, and she thinks that the other kids are “better” at reading. However, when a new teacher comes along and helps Ally find her confidence, she feels better and more confident than she is before, even with some people trying to push her down. Can Ally find her inner courage to speak up and just be herself? Read the book to find out!
I love this book so much because it really stresses the themes of friendship, confidence, being yourself, and staying true to yourself. I especially love how it is related to the author’s life as a middle-schooler. When I read the note the author included in the book, it said that she was wondering why she couldn’t be like the other kids, just like Ally did. The author also said that as a sixth grader, she was placed in a class with Mr. Christy, a teacher who helped the author change her perception. “We all have both our special talents and areas where we need to work a bit harder,” the author wrote in her note. “Honestly, I’ve learned much more from-and have been ultimately successful because of-my failures. Things will not always be easy; sometimes we do fail.”
This book is connected to a song that I love to listen to: Titanium. It links to the book because of its themes of staying strong when things get tough, trying again, and having confidence even in your worst moments. Just because people say mean things, it doesn’t mean you have to listen to them. That is what both the song and the book stress, and people can get that message in the book Fish in a Tree.
In conclusion, I suggest that you check this book out and start reading it right away!
