Ella Enchanted is a fantasy book about a girl named Ella who is given the “gift” of obedience by a foolish fairy, Lucinda. When Ella is fourteen, she and her mother become ill. Because Ella drinks some soup with unicorn hairs and her mother takes out the unicorn hairs, the mother ends up dying. At the funeral of Ella’s mother, Ella meets the kind royal family member, Char, who has an affection towards Ella’s mother. At the wake, Ella is introduced to Dame Olga and her rude daughters, Olive and Hattie.
Ella’s selfish father decides to send Ella to boarding school. Ella visits all of her favorite places, running into Char once again. They spend some time together. Then Ella leaves for boarding school. On the trip to the boarding school, Hattie soon realizes that Ella obeys any command, so she takes advantage of that. First, she takes Ella’s necklace. Second, she forces Ella not to eat for three days. Soon Ella finds a new friend, Areida, and she becomes not so lonely anymore. Hattie orders for Ella to stop hanging out with Areida. Ella finds this unacceptable, and, hearing about a giant’s wedding, figures that Lucinda will be there. Ella can try to have her undo the spell.
Ella sets out on a journey to the giant’s wedding, having an encounter with elves and ogres. She reaches the wedding and says to Lucinda that she has a curse and wishes for more mettle. Lucinda, however, doesn’t undo the curse, but makes Ella be happy about the curse and think of it as a blessing. Ella rides with her father home in a carriage and learns that her father has lost everything. Ella and her father have dinner with a duke. The father finds him too poor for Ella, so he marries Dame Olga.
At the wedding of Olga and Ella’s father, Peter, Lucinda gives the groom and bride the gift of being in love with each other forever. At home, Peter confesses he’s poor. Olga can’t be angry with Peter, due to Lucinda’s gift, but transfers her hate to Ella. Will Ella be able to break the curse? Or will she have to obey every command?
This is a great book! I feel it’s a bit similar to Cinderella, but maybe the author wanted it to be similar to Cinderella. It features a ball, a prince, a girl-that states Cinderella. I recommend this book to people 8 years old and above. I also recommend this book to fantasy and Cinderella fans. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and read Ella Enchanted!!!
