Flip! Flip! You flip through the last few pages of your book. You finish it and then ponder what you should read next. You can’t decide! If you’ve ever had a situation like this, don’t worry. I have a book suggestion!
The Black Pearl is a book about a boy named Ramon. His father is a pearl diver and sells pearls to people. Ramon knows that he would become a partner with his father, going pearl diving. He goes pearl diving with a friendly Native American named Soto. Ramon goes pearl diving alone one day because Soto gets hurt. The boy finds the Pearl of Heaven, retrieving it. His father is gone, and once Ramon goes to the place where his father does work, a boy starts looking through a slit. The boy tries to find out what Ramon is doing.
Many people are soon near the work place Ramon’s father returns and goes to his work place to see what all the commotion is about. He finds out that Ramon has retrieved the Pearl of Heaven. Ramon’s father tries to sell the pearl to four dealers, but he says that they would have to pay 24,000 pesos for the pearl. In the end, the pearl is placed in the church. Once, when Ramon’s father goes out to sea, he doesn’t return. Ramon soon learns from a survivor of the boat, the Servillano, that his father died because of the storm.
Ramon wonders if the Pearl of Heaven is truly cursed, like Soto said. He tries to return the pearl to the lagoon where he found it, but he is stopped by Ruiz, the Servillano, who is trying to steal the pearl. Ruiz persuades that they should go to Guaymas to sell the pearl. On their way, they come across a giant mantra ray that Ramon believes to be the Manta Diablo. The Servillano uses his harpoon, trying to kill the creature. In doing so, he ends getting caught by an unraveled rope and dragged down into the depths of the ocean.
Ramon goes back to his hometown, La Paz. He gives the pearl back to the Madonna in the church, putting it in Her hands. Ramon thinks of coming up with a story about his adventure. He knows that his mother wouldn’t believe what really happened. I love this book! It’s a great one, and I recommend it for people 10 and up. I would also recommend to people who love adventurous books. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and read The Black Pearl, which is written by Scott O’Dell!!!
