Hello, here is a note: this book is 3 books in 1 from the series, which is why each review is separated.
Mia’s Boiling Point
This book starts out with a girl named Mia, who is having a great life. She has a best friend named Katie and two other friends at her new school named Alexia and Emma. They formed a cupcake business, but it’s small. They still earn money from it, though. The group also does parties and birthdays.
Mia’s parents are divorced, which is a bit sad for her. She wishes that her parents were together again instead of her mom being with Eddie and her dad having a new girlfriend that he never told her about until now. Plus, the woman has a 5-year-old son who’s very bratty. One day, Mia and her mom go to the mall and find a new shop that must have recently opened.
Now, Mia has been wishing for the perfect shoes with pointed tips and not too high or low heels. She’s obsessed with fashion, which is why she thinks about this. This shop makes her wishes come true. Mia sees the perfect shoes she loves! But the issue is that it costs $212, which is something she definitely can’t afford. Luckily, her mom is willing to split the price of the shoes, so Mia now is determined to work hard to earn that money and buy her dream shoes!
Then, something happens. Mia sees a new girl that she never saw before in her homeroom. She has bangs, brown hair, and a beautiful outfit, which Mia immediately notices. The teacher tells everyone that her name is Olivia and that she can take a seat. So Mia invites her to sit next to her. Olivia gets invited then to eat lunch with the rest of the group. So far, so good, right? A new friend is nice, but is Olivia actually kind?
Olivia sits with Mia and the rest of her friends for a few days at lunch, but she keeps on interrupting other people or talks and laughs about people because something embarrassing happened to them during class. It makes Alexia, Emma, and Katie a bit skeptical about Olivia.
Olivia and Mia exchange numbers and soon are hanging out with each other a bit more. But what about Katie, Mia’s other best friend? One time, Mia accidentally hangs out with Olivia on a day and time when Katie wants to see a new polar bear movie with Mia.
Plus, it seems like Olivia doesn’t really care about Mia. Mia talks about shoes that she wants and her closet, but Olivia seems mostly interested only in the closet with clothes. Mia doesn’t really see the picture and that Olivia is actually manipulating and using her.
Mia always talks about Olivia and hangs out with her, so she starts thinking a bit about Katie and how she must miss hanging out with Mia. So they hang out one day and have fun. Olivia wants to redecorate her new locker, so Mia does the work and buys the supplies with her shoe savings. But it is a ruse so that Olivia can now buy the shoes with the money she owed to Mia.
Olivia even asks to go to the birthday party that Mia and her cupcake group are going to give cupcakes at. But it goes wrong since 1, Mia sees Olivia wearing her dream shoes, 2, Olivia is annoyed and pretends she wants to help, 3, she starts flirting with some of the boys, and 4, she drops the cupcakes on the tray that she is serving to the boys. However, Olivia gets covered from head to toe with cupcakes! It is hilarious, but Olivia gets embarrassed and walks out of the house.
The cupcake group gets the party back on track and cleans the mess up. Even though Mia loses a friend, she sees Olivia’s true colors showing.
Emma, Smile and Say “Cupcake!”
This next book starts with another girl named Emma, who is part of the Cupcake Club as well. She models for a wedding place and has been ever since one time, when she was delivering cupcakes there, she got a request by Romaine Ford, a celebrity. Emma got asked to be a model for bridesmaid dresses, and now she models for Mona, the owner of the store, about once or twice for trunk shows as well as getting paid!
One day, Emma gets an offer to be in a modeling ad by Mona! Emma’s parents have to be okay with it, though. But they might not since it’s gonna be on the newspaper, and everyone will see it. However, they still approve of it. Just no makeup. So Emma does the modeling ad, and it goes well!
Soon, people start noticing Emma and calling her a bit of a “celebrity”. It draws attention to Olivia as well, because Olivia starts to talk to Emma at lunch about the ad. Still, she doesn’t seem very interested and is also bragging a bit about her experience.
Emma gets invited to another modeling ad, and even though it doesn’t work out, the woman gives Emma a business card that belongs to the famous celebrity in their town, Alana Swenson! Emma’s agent for modeling soon becomes Alana, and when Olivia hears about it, she says a few days later that she also gets to be with Alana.
Olivia is probably lying though, because the next time Emma sees the model place, Olivia isn’t even there. But something worse is that Emma’s mom invites Olivia to another modeling ad that Emma is going to. So they start modeling together at Mona’s shop. Olivia even seems to be nice when she’s not at school. But in school, she is rude and a bit of a liar.
Meanwhile, the Cupcake Club makes cupcakes for Emma’s mom’s birthday. They also have more deliveries to the wedding place. Emma sadly has to take down a modeling job to be able to model for the wedding place, though. And the sad thing is that it gives $5000! But Emma’s glad that she is at least a bit famous and likes her job. Even though Olivia and her aren’t friends, and even though Emma didn’t get that $5000, at least she still has the Cupcake Club and a bit of a modeling job!
Alexis Gets Frosted
This is the last book of the 3-in-1 book and starts with the third girl part of the Cupcake Club, Alexis, the girl who loves to plan, schedule, and is smart. The day after winter break ends, Alexis and her friends are going back to school. While her friends aren’t prepared, Alexis is and has all of her supplies. She even talks about going skiing and jokes about Olivia. Then Olivia starts teasing her a bit in a mean way for no reason. What’s going on?
Luckily, Alexis’s friends make her feel better, and she doesn’t even see Olivia for the rest of the day! After school, the rest of the Cupcake Club goes to Alexis’s house and starts to plan for a preschool teacher’s baby shower. They come up with ideas for making cupcakes, getting supplies, and flavors. The group also discusses their background knowledge about their moms. But Alexis is the only one who can’t really say anything about hers since she has little information about her mom.
After Alexis’s friends leave, Alexis starts asking her mom questions about her childhood. Her mom says that she liked playing with a dollhouse and doing ballet. Alexis wants to know more, though, and she finds out that the dollhouse is at Grandma and Granddad’s house.
Alexis has a new project that she needs to do. She has to make something that represents something from the history of Victoria. She decides to do a diorama instead of what everyone else is doing: a costume. Alexis has help from her friends so she can get ideas and build the model with gingerbread! They even come up with an idea to make a time capsule of their moms’ memories for their future children!
Meanwhile, at school, Olivia is still making fun of Alexis and bullying her. Some days, Alexis doesn’t come across her at all. But others, not so lucky. Why is this happening? Alexis keeps on wondering this and soon confronts to her mom about it. Her mom talks to her about if you say or do something mean to someone, then it won’t always end well. Alexis suddenly remembers about the joke she told her friends about Olivia and skiing, so one of Olivia’s comrades who heard must have told her. How will Alexis fix this? Will she apologize? Find out in the book!
I love all of these books and enjoyed reading them. I would recommend them for girls going into middle school. Another thing that makes it fun other than the plot are activities in the back of the book you can do, like quizzes, discover recipes, and find more recommended books. So go ahead and read these recreational books when you get a chance to!
