Hello! This book review is about the book that kept my eyes glued to the pages and made me want to read more of it. It’s called Unfriended by Rachel Vail, and although it might have a few minor curses, you should still read it.
Unfriended is about a girl named Truly who is now in 8th grade but is still short. One day, one of her ex-best friends comes and asks her to sit at the Popular Table. Truly really wants to sit there, so she accepts the invitation, leaving behind her best friend, Hazel, a weird, green-haired girl. Hazel gets upset and exasperated at Truly for ditching her for some stupid popular girls. But can you really blame Truly for leaving Hazel to go to the Popular Table? I mean, it’s the Popular Table, which has popular kids who are famous!
Natasha tries to be kind to Truly, but it seems like the Popular Table girls (Brooke, Evangeline, and Lulu) like and respect Truly a bit more than Natasha. Meanwhile, Hazel is dealing with her own problems. Her pet bird died, and she’s still upset and mad at Truly. Hazel even is ignoring Truly, so they aren’t talking or interacting with each other. She’s also furious at Natasha for taking Truly away from her, so Hazel gets her revenge. She emails Brooke, who she has interacted with before, about Natasha saying rude things about Truly behind her back.
Natasha finds herself kicked out of the table, and she gets very angry and wistful. She feels like Truly is the one who caused this. She was trying to be nice, but apparently, she wasn’t wanted. If that wasn’t enough to agitate her enough to do something, it seems like what happened next could. Truly posts a few pictures, tags Natasha, and then untags her, which is actually impolite. It’s something that’s not like Truly, but she did it. Natasha takes decides that it’s finally time to take revenge. So she does what she has to do, but if you want to find out what happens next, you have to read the book to find out!
Unfriended is an amazing book that I would recommend for 7th graders and up as well as for people who like realistic fiction. I give it a 5-star rating for its amazing plot and the reality of middle school: that it’s not always just some happy paradise-sometimes it can be the worst and last place you’d want to be. You should definitely read this book if you’re looking for a juicy, new read.
