“Old Yeller” Book Review by Kruti!!!

Do you love outstanding books? Do you love books that won’t bore you? Then this is the right book for you!!

Old Yeller is a book about a boy named Travis whose father goes away for a certain period of time. Travis is ordered to look after the house and family, and that means protecting Mama and Little Arliss, his brother. A stray dog comes and steals some of their meat, and that’s how the family comes to owning and loving the stray, whom they name Old Yeller. Travis, at first, doesn’t like Old Yeller. He doesn’t admire him because the family adopted the dog even though he stole their meat!

Travis soon starts to like Old Yeller when the dog saves Little Arliss from a bear and bear cub. Old Yeller has proved that he can protect the family as well. The dog helps with hunting, and their life is going good. So far. One day, a man named Burn Sanderson comes to the house. He warns Travis about hydrophobia and that he wants Old Yeller. Travis declines the offer and thinks about the warning.

Old Yeller and Travis go to mark the hogs, but Old Yeller gets hurt during the process. Travis gets hurt as well and goes back home without Old Yeller. Travis tells Mama what happened, and after mending Travis’s wound, they go get Old Yeller and fix him up. Soon, their cow, Spot, starts acting funny. The cow keeps walking and bawling, not taking care of its calf. Travis and his family realize that the cow has hydrophobia. A bull with hydrophobia comes as well. The family kills both animals, but they come across a wolf with hydrophobia. Old Yeller, who is weak, attacks the wolf.

If you think this is a happy story in which Old Yeller doesn’t die and lives forever with the family, you’re wrong. But if you think Old Yeller dies because of being torn to death by the wolf, you’re also wrong. Old Yeller gets bitten by the wolf, and so Travis has no choice but to burn Old Yeller. Old Yeller is burnt to death. That’s not the end of the story, though! Want to find out what happens next? Read the book!

This is a great book! I recommend it people who are 10 and up. (Yes, adults can read it as well.) I would also recommend it to people who love dogs and deep books-by deep, I mean sophisticated and complicated feelings. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead and read Old Yeller, a fantastic book with a sad ending!!!
