“The Young Man and the Sea” Book Review by Kruti!!!

Hello! Today, I will be talking about a book called The Young Man and the Sea. I think it’s an amazing book, and you’ll see why after reading this review. You should consider even reading the book after this.

The Young Man and the Sea starts off by talking about a boy named Skiff Beaman, who is 12 years old. Sadly, his mother is dead due to a sickness, and Skiff has never cried since that day. His father’s too depressed to even get up from the couch, so when Mary Rose, their fishing boat, sinks, it’s up to Skiff to try and fix it again. He gets help from a man named Mr. Woodwell and Captain Keelson to raise the boat and repair it.

But the damage that was done to the boat sinking is still not fixed, for when Skiff tries to use it, it still doesn’t work. Calling in a professional, he finds out that it costs a minimum price of $5,000 to fix it! Now what will Skiff do? He can’t afford that! So Skiff comes up with a plan to make enough money to fix the boat, Mary Rose. Skiff decides to capture lobsters to sell, and if he captures about 1,000 of them, he’ll be good to go!

The thing is, Skiff gets bothered by another boy who’s very rich. His name is Tyler Croft, and his father used to be very good friends with Skiff’s father. But now, they’re not friends anymore. That can’t be the reason why since Skiff got bothered by Tyler even before the two parents stopped being friends. Maybe Tyler just does it for the heck of it, or because he has nothing better to do.

Anyways, Tyler actually has the nerve to cut the lobster traps and get the lobsters out of them. Skiff gets very angry, but he can’t do much about it. It’s a rich boy versus a lobster boy. If you heard that without any context, who’d you think would win? The rich boy, of course.

Skiff’s not giving up on the 5 grand, so when he hears that someone bought a bluefin tuna for a lot of money, he realizes that he has to fish for bigger fish in the sea-specifically the bluefin tuna. He travels in his skiff at night, but the fish is the least of his worries. Will he even be able to get past traveling 30 miles in the ocean? Find out in the book, The Young Man and the Sea!

I rate this book 4.5 stars! I love the plot, and the characters are well-depicted in the book. I think it’s amazing how the emotions at the beginning and middle part of the book are very descriptive and relatable for some people. At first, I thought this book was going to be boring just because I thought it was a book about someone fixing a boat. But as I read on, the plot became more and more interesting to read. So go ahead and read this magnificent book!
