Cupcake Diaries: Katie’s New Recipe is a book about a girl named Katie who is in the Cupcake Club. She has been a single mom since her father left her when she was 2 years old. Katie thinks her mom is acting suspiciously. Her mom keeps dressing up fancily and puts on lip gloss every day. She even followed her mom one day when her mother went out for a run and caught a glimpse of a man with her. It could’ve been her possible boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Katie and the Cupcake Club had to come up with what to bake for the school’s PTA meeting and dinner. They had to bake cupcakes, obviously. But they also had to arrange a specific flavor that would fit the theme of the PTA meeting. The Cupcake Club came up with different flavors that go with each other since the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) meeting meant an alliance: two forces that joined together. That’s why the Cupcake Club went with the classic combo: PB+J (Peanut Butter and Jelly). However, they disagreed on the type of jelly they were going to use.
After taste-testing several flavors of jellies that Emma, a member of the Cupcake Club, bought at an extravagant store, the majority of the Cupcake Club chose to use the guava jelly. However, only Katie wanted to use grape jelly. She hated change and was very stubborn in sticking with the grape jelly. Mia, another member of the Cupcake Club and Katie’s best friend, convinced Katie to use guava jelly and that everyone else would do something they didn’t like. Mia would wear a sweatshirt, Emma would compete in the Egg Race, and Alexis, another member of the Cupcake Club, would eat spicy food. That made Katie feel better about her friends dealing with change with her.
Katie and George had been friends since first grade, but they might be crushing on each other. However, they’ve still been just friends, and it’s a bit awkward. I personally think there should be a book where George and Katie are together after one of them has the guts to ask the other out. Katie has other more essential things to deal with than a crush, cupcakes, and a mysterious boyfriend. Katie’s father has recently emailed her and asked her if she wanted to meet him. Katie talked to her mom about it, so her mom reached out to her dad. Katie was now wavering between two choices: she could meet her dad or even see him in the future, or she would never meet her dad at all. All her life, Katie has probably been wondering what her dad looks like. But her dad has been in Stoneybrook, the town they live in. Mia and Katie go to Katie’s dad’s restaurant (Yes, he owns a restaurant.) What will happen? Will Katie’s dad recognize Katie, or will he not even take a glance at her? Find out in the book!
This is a book I’d rate 5 stars. I love the symbolism of the peanut butter and guava jelly. It’s nice to stick with the classics, but you can’t always have things be the same. Sometimes, things alter, like life for Katie is a bit altered. I also like the character Katie and her backstory. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and read the book!
