Falafel is known as a popular street food around the world which derived from Middle East. Delicious deep fried and spiced ground chickpeas balls stuffed into a pita bread with hot sauce, tahini sauce, and lettuce, tomato, cucumber, onion, and yogurt. Falafel is super versatile. Falafel can be enjoyed as a snack for lunch or even for dinner.
Ingredients to make falafel are 3 cups dried chickpea, fistful of cilantro leaves, 1.5 TBSP of salt, 1 TSP red chilli powder, 1 TBSP cumin powder, 6 TBSP lime juice, 6 TBSP gram flour, sunflower oil for deep frying, and 1 TBSP black crushed pepper.
Instructions
- Soak the dried chickpeas with enough water overnight.
- Drain and rinse chickpeas and transfer them to a bowl.
- In a food processor add cilantro and chickpeas, pulse until they start to break down. Scrape down the sides, and process until the mixture is even and finely ground. The mixture should hold together when you press it between your fingers.
- Remove the mixture to a bowl and add salt, gram flour, cumin powder, lime juice, red chilli powder, and black crushed pepper. Add gram flour if your mixture seems excessively wet. Combine all the ingredients well.
- Heat oil in a deep pot. Scoop out the mixture and roll between your palms to form into round balls. Slowly add the falafel into oil for deep frying. Fry the falafel in medium to low flame until nice deep brown. Drain on the paper towel.
- Serve in pita with chopped lettuce, yogurt sauce, and red sauce. Enjoy!
Ingredients to make red sauce are 3 red bell peppers, 12 Kashmiri dry chillies soaked in hot water for about 2 hours, 1.5 TSP cumin seeds, and 3/4 TSP salt.
Instructions
- Drain the red chillies completely and set aside.
- Cut the stems off of the bell peppers and chop the peppers into large pieces and add to a blender with the red chillis, cumin seeds, and salt. Blend them well. If necessary, add 1-2 tbsp of water at a time to help things move.
- Sauce should be thick and smooth.
- Remove from blender and serve.
Ingredients to make white sauce are 1 cup of Greek yogurt, 1 TBSP coconut sugar, 1/2 TSP red chilli powder, 6 TBSP finely chopped cilantro, and salt to taste.
Instructions
- Take Greek yogurt and add about 6 TBSP of water and mix well.
- Add all other ingredients and combine everything well.
Assembly:
- Inside of a pita add 3 to 4 falafel balls, slightly smashed along with toppings, lettuce, and top it off with white and red sauce.
