“Cupcake Diaries: Katie and the Cupcake War” Book Review by Kruti!!!

Do you fancy cupcakes? Do you enjoy books with a bit of drama and an irresistible plot? Then this book is just for you!

Cupcake Diaries: Katie and the Cupcake War is a book about a girl named Katie who’s starting school again and seeing all of her best friends after a long summer break. They’re all going to be starting seventh grade, and Katie needs all the luck she can get. Hence, she wears several fortuitous accessories and clothing on the first day of seventh grade. It seemed like luck was attracted towards her that day!

First of all, George Martinez, a boy Katie had known since elementary school, starts acting a bit weird towards her on the bus. Mia suspects he likes her, but Katie denies it. Second, news arrives that Sydney Whitman, the leader of the Popular Girl Club (PGC), has moved, which possibly means that Callie would want to be friends with Katie again! After getting off the bus, Katie and Mia, one of Katie’s best friends, meet up with Alexis and Emma, their other best friends. The girls divide and go to their classes.

Katie has nearly all of her classes with her best friends, which is a relief. Last year, Katie didn’t have any classes with any of her friends, which was a bummer. Her locker even opens when she puts the code in, unlike last year! However, Callie doesn’t seem to be running off to Katie to be friends with her. In fact, she’s actually starting a war with her! Katie and her best friends are at The Cupcake Club and always make cupcakes for the annual fundraisers the school holds. This year, Callie, Maggie, and Bella, now named the Best Friends Club instead of the Popular Girls Club, decide to also bake cupcakes for the fundraiser! The war is on!

Katie forgets to do her English homework because of the news her mom has for her. She knew her mother was acting strange, but she had no idea what was going on. At dinner, Katie’s mom reveals that Katie’s grandmother has to have surgery done for her heart. After going for a run, they feel less perturbed by the heart surgery. Katie disremembers the poem she had to write for the homework and tries to make up for it. Meanwhile, Katie tries to focus on the ideas for the Cupcake Club’s fundraiser and her homework instead of Callie and her new club. She even starts to act a bit like Sydney did!

Just when it seems like things might be getting better after hanging out with friends and focusing more on school work, Katie has to stay at Callie’s house for a few days while her mother visits Katie’s grandmother! It’s unfair and unrighteous because how Callie hasn’t been much of a good friend to Katie. After the fundraiser, Katie would get dropped off at Callie’s house. Katie and her friends created their theme to be related to the ’60s since that was when their school started. When they and the BFC arrived, you would never guess what the BFC did for their cupcakes’ theme and flavor! Want to find out? Read the book to see what happens next!

Overall, I would rate this book 5 stars because of its alluring and beguiling plot and shocking plot twist! The book even includes a preview of the next book in the series, which encourages you to keep reading the whole set. I would recommend this book to people who like realistic fiction books and people who are 10 years and older. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead, read the book, and find out what happens next!
